About this event
We are happy to announce the 2025 map gallery and contest. See below for rules and contest categories. We will be accepting up to 30 entries this year and we look forward to reviewing your abstracts!
The gallery and contest will feature awards in 6 categories:
Best Cartographic Design will go to a map that is creative, visually pleasing, readily legible and employs both fundamental cartographic concepts and advanced detail in the display of geographic information.
Best Analysis will go to a map that displays quality in analysis of geographic variables, data integration, and an unbiased display of analytical results.
Best Web Application will go to an application that is thoughtfully designed with the end user in mind and incorporates a pleasant aesthetic as well as logical functionality.
Best Student Poster will go to a map or poster that is either cartographically or analytically focused and is created by a student.
Best Student Web Application will go to an application that is thoughtfully designed with the end user in mind and incorporates a pleasant aesthetic as well as logical functionality and is created by a student.
Viewer’s Choice will go to a map or poster that is voted on by visitors to the map gallery
Map gallery and contest rules:
- Abstracts (175 words or less ) are due on or before August 15. You will be notified when your abstract has been accepted and will be provided a link to submit your map or app at that time.
- Participants may submit multiple entries.
- A PDF, JPG, or PNG of your map or a link to your web application will be requested upon acceptance of your abstract and must be submitted by September 12 for review by the map gallery judges. Entries submitted after that date are eligible for viewer’s choice, but not map judging.
- Web applications must be publicly accessible to be eligible.
- StoryMaps or Web Applications will be presented in the gallery on a laptop provided by the participant. Power will be supplied. Participants may wish to lock their laptops and put them in presentation mode for security purposes in the gallery.
- Maps and Posters will be presented in the gallery on foam board. Easels and binder clips will be provided for map and poster entrants. Please bring a hard copy of map and foam board for mounting. If foam board is needed, it may be requested ahead of time.
- Entrants are encouraged to be in the gallery at a specified time during the conference (TBD) to answer any questions about their maps and mingle with other participants.
- Winners will be announced and awards will be handed out at the closing group session of the conference.
